Did you watch this segment? On CBS 60 Minutes on March 19, 2017, they featured Julia, a Muppet with autism on her debut episode on Sesame Street.
Christine Ferraro, a writer at Sesame Street for 25 years told 60 Minutes, It’s tricky because autism is not one thing, because it is different for every single person who has autism. There is an expression that goes, “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.”
Julia came up last year for the first time. We hope for more characters with autism to be featured in our entertainment industry.
We collaborate with films, books and television shows to help bring a realistic portrayal of autism and other disabilities to our entertainment industry. We would love to collaborate with Sesame Workshop and other organizations to share our experiences with others from our background in theater and growing up on the spectrum. As mentioned in the video, about them bringing in people to educate at Sesame Workshop, we’d love to come to visit them to speak on our experiences.
