Some time ago I did a Q&A with Brennan Farmer, a young boy who at the age of 7 wrote his first children’s book What About Me? about being an autism sibling. Now I’m happy to say his mom, the fabulous blogger Mandy Farmer has written a children’s book of her own called “I Like Dinosaurs Too!”
The book looks at the true story of Mandy’s son Evan, a young boy with autism while he is in school. Without giving away too many spoilers the emphasis of the book is that while it looks at what makes him different than his classmates, it also focuses on what makes him similar to his classmates.
This is highlighted perfectly on the back cover of her book where Mandy wrote, “When a child has autism, we often focus on what makes that child different, but it’s equally important to talk about the ways we are all the same.”
We have a saying in our community that, “If you’ve met one individual with autism, you’ve met one individual with autism.” This quote, written by autism advocate Dr. Stephen Shore is to remind us all that autism is a spectrum diagnosis. With that being said though Mandy provides a beautiful and unique perspective I wish more members of our autism community would take the time to understand. By looking at similarities, I hope we can focus on unity within our community.
Growing up with autism, I often felt like an alien compared to my classmates (until about 5th grade when I moved to a private school for students with learning disabilities). I was the only one in my classes who was actually on the autism spectrum. After reading I Like Dinosaurs Too! I thought to myself how much a book like this would have helped my classmates understand me a little bit better when I had limited social abilities to do that on my own.
I would highly recommend this book not only to school-aged children but also to educators, therapists and those who are simply wanting to learn more about autism. We can only hope this is the start of a series of books written by Mandy and her family to help our community with acceptance and understanding for years to come!
