This is why we need to continue to promote professional development opportunities for educators to understand more about our special needs community.
I recently interviewed a woman from Dublin, Ireland for our Facebook Video Series A Special Community who confided in me that one of her son’s who is on the autism spectrum had a principal who said that they didn’t know what autism was.
I found her interview above very powerful not only in this comment but also discussing the importance of autism acceptance.
I wrote a A Letter to Our Principals on Spreading Autism Awareness & Acceptance which you can read here based on my journey from nonverbal autism to today being a professional speaker and giving talks in the schools.
You can watch more videos from our video series here.
