This guest post is by Kameron Conner, a young man on the autism spectrum who was accepted to Texas A&M San Antonio and Texas State University. Kameron is applying for the Spring 2021 Making a Difference Autism Scholarship via the nonprofit KFM Making a Difference started by me, Kerry Magro. I was nonverbal till 2.5 and diagnosed with autism at 4 and you can read more about my organization here.
I hope you can support my nonprofit like I’m trying to support these students with scholarship aid for college. Learn more on how you can help our cause with a small donation (just asking for $3 today, equal to your daily cup of coffee) here.
My name is Kameron Conner, when I was in the fifth grade I was diagnosed with autism. Earlier on, I was labeled with a learning disability when I was in the first grade. I had to persevere and stay the course despite my challenges. The challenging experiences that I have been going through in school are being singled out for persecution, people saying that I would not be anything, being called all kinds of names that were highly untrue of me, criticized, and harassed. When I was 11 years old, my parents kept me back a year in the 5th grade because I was not emotionally and academically developed to be promoted to the 6th grade. When I was in junior high, I went through a lot of struggles. The first year of junior high was very difficult. I dealt with a lot of negativity towards me, but I did not let that define me from getting better each day and doing what I needed to do. I knew I was there for a purpose. I worked hard and became the most improved student being promoted from my 8th-grade class.
I moved on to high school where I faced even more challenges trying to fit in socially. It was extremely hard to make and keep friends due to communication differences. By seeking help, staying motivated, and being persistent, I was nominated for a student-teacher choice award during my junior year of high school. I also received numerous academic awards throughout my high school years.
I am now currently in college and I have experienced a lot of things that were different from high school, I must admit that the road is not easy, but I am working hard, staying the course, and striving to be better each day. It was once said that it’s possible I won’t be able to make it on my own. I am driving, able to hold down a part-time job, handle personal banking and shopping tasks, and achieving what I have deemed to be better than the mere standards expected of me.
My major is clinical exercise science. I am studying to become a physical therapist. The reason why I am trying to become a physical therapist is that I would like to make a difference in people’s lives. My motive in this field is to help people gain strength and mobility. I would like for them to be able to live an independent, healthy, and normal life. I feel that physical therapy is something that I would love to do. I have been doing observation hours. My goal is to be an achiever despite what others say and think of me. Yet my main goal is to become an inspiration and a testimony for other people that may struggle with the same challenges as I do. I would like to show them that no matter what your struggle is, with hard work and perseverance you can do anything you put your mind to.
