Tory Ridgeway, a young autistic man received a full Navy ROTC scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. It was letter rescinded by the Navy citing “academic skills and development disorders” that is often considered a disqualification for scholarship aid.
Ridgeway told NBC Washington “Upon seeing that I had autism, they declined me, saying that autism was a disqualification. It’s still got my head spinning. It’s still got me stressed out.”
A GoFundMe has been started to help pay for Ridgeway’s college tuition now that his scholarship has been rescinded.
What’s your take on this? While the U.S. tends to disqualify autistic individuals from service other countries have supported them in the past. A short time ago we spotlighted Nathan who received rank of staff sergeant in the US Army Reserve. When I was attending college I received minimal scholarship aid due to my challenges with testing. That inspired me to start a scholarship program that you can learn more about here.
