A Fox News guest called Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old with autism, ‘mentally ill’

Michael Knowles, a conservative podcast host, was a guest on Fox News recently and called Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate activist who is on the autism spectrum a “mentally ill Swedish child.”

I had to come on and talk about this because I was absolutely stunned. I see a lot of rude comments on television but being rude to a minor in this way, regardless if she has autism or not, is completely unacceptable. I was diagnosed with autism at 4 and felt so bad for Greta.

Autism Society where I serve on the Panel of Advisors on the Autism Spectrum wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “To intentionally demean any person, regardless of neuro-diversity, is both cruel and wrong. Certainly some might disagree with Ms. Thunberg on policy issues, but it is shameful to issue a derogatory statement to a youth advocate.”

Thankfully Mr. Knowles has been told by Fox News that he will not be allowed back on this show.

Bullying needs to stop and we need to continue to advocate for positive role models for our loved ones to look up too. In a world where you can be anything…Be kind.
