Looking for something new to watch? A new show called “Speechless” has been picked up by ABC. The show that looks at the lives of a family with three children includes one teenager named JJ who’s nonverbal and uses a wheelchair.
What makes the show even that more interesting is that the actor who plays JJ (Micah Fowler) has cerebral palsy in real life. This is a positive step in the right direction for including special need actors in film and television. If you remember RJ Mitte who himself has cerebral palsy played Bryan’s Cranston character’s son who had cerebral palsy on AMC’s “Breaking Bad.”
Speechless airs Wednesdays at 8:30 PM ET on ABC. Check your local listings.
For the past several years I’ve worked with the entertainment industry as a consultant to bring a realistic portrayal of autism and other special needs to the big screen through my work on projects such as Joyful Noise (Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton) and Jane Wants a Boyfriend (Louisa Krause, Eliza Dushku).
