Woman With Autism To Debut In New TV Comedy

Will you be tuning in?

The cable network Freeform will debut “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” on January 16th at 8:30 PM EST.

Actress Kayla Cromer who has autism, will be playing the role of Matilda who also is on the autism spectrum.

Recently, disability representation has been in the news as studies indicated that less than 1 percent of disabled characters are actually played by disabled actors.

As an autism entertainment consultant who recently just worked on the HBO series Mrs. Fletcher based on one of the characters who is nonverbal, I’m very excited to see that more people on the autism spectrum are being included in projects such as these. This is a great step towards more representation and authentic performances.

I’m also excited that they are featuring a woman on the autism spectrum as most of the prominent shows out there today feature boys on the autism spectrum versus girls. Today in the U.S. boys are diagnosed 4 times more often than girls.

Kayla told Variety about playing this role, “So many characters today are portrayed by people who do not have a difference and honestly people with a difference are fully capable of playing our own type.”

I will definitely be tuning in.
